How to describe Facial Features and Expressions

Hey everyone, Welcome to the first chapter of Writing tips by Anika

We amateur writers always struggle when it comes to describing the facial features or expressions of our favorite fictional character, So I decided to write a blog about this particular problem.

First of all, you need to imagine the scene inside your head which you trying to write. This is very important to know how your character is going to respond to a particular situation, What is the character's facial feature?

For example, look at the picture below

Now I am going to write a few sentences using the above facial features

1. Forehead

  • Aria asked with a light wrinkle on her forehead.
  • Arthur's forehead creased.
  • Sweat beaded on Sarah's forehead as she was not able to breathe properly.
  • She bumped into the wall and hurt her forehead.
  • He kissed her passionately on the lips and then joined their foreheads together.

2. Brows

  • Pia asked knitting her brows together.
  • Sandra was confused, a line etched between her brows.
  • Aaron inquired his mother, perspiration shone on his brows.
  • Ana's brows drew together as she looked at his boss, confused.
  • Ziba’s brows snapped together.

3. Eyes

  • She removed tears from the inner eye using the tip of her index finger.
  • Shikha's eyes flooded with tears when reality hit her real hard.
  • She squeezed her eyes close when she saw a truck speeding towards her.
  • The first thing that attracted Chris towards Mishka was her glossy brown eyes.
  • He shut his eyes closed as he was unable to see her going away from him.

4. Nose / Bridge of the nose

  • He pinched the bridge of her nose with an amused face.
  • Sharon nostrils flared in anger and she slammed her fist on the wooden desk.
  • Dave asked Rose about Jane while scratching the bridge of his nose.
  • Raven’s nose wrinkled upon learning the startling fact.
  • She looked at him with her red puffy eyes while rubbing her nose.

5. Cheekbones and Jaws

  • Her deep blue eyes, fuller lips, and high cheekbones were attracting him towards her.
  • “You fall again?” he asked gazing at her bruised cheekbone.
  • Sierra clenched her jaw when she saw her boyfriend with his ex-girlfriend.
  • His jaw tightened when Leena asked for the divorce.
  • Risha’s jaw dropped when she found her husband making out with his secretary inside his cabin.

6. Lips / Cupid bow lip

  • Her cupid bow lip was covered in scarlet red color.
  • He rubbed his thumb over Cara’s soft lips and smeared her lipstick.
  • She asked him while biting her lower lip.
  • His lips drew back in a snarl.
  • Sara’s lips trembled when she spotted him coming closer to her.
  • A smile tugged at his lips.

 7. Chin

  • Aaron kept his index finger under her chin and forced her to look him in the eyes.
  • She was in a deep thought while tapping her index finger on her chin.
  • Turning her head, he lifted her chin and gazed into her eyes.
  • Kissing his chin, she worked her way around to his cheeks.
  • She clutched the blanket up to her chin to hide her naked body.

Replace "said" with (Volume 1)

Hey! This is Anika and I welcome you all to the first edition of "Relace said with"  Sometimes ‘He said’ and ‘She said’ can dull and grow boring if overused. You should only replace “said” if the line of dialogue requires accentuation or verbalization to convey the way it expresses the words and constantly the word, “said” doesn’t quite do the job. If you’re struggling to find that exquisite and particular replacement, then this blog is for you. In this edition, we will talk about the other words (Categorized by Emotions with meanings) which we can use instead of said to keep the dialogue natural and engrossing.  So let's start: ANGER Snapped - to speak or say something in an impatient, usually angry. Snarled - to make an angry sound while showing the teeth. Growled - to make a low noise in the throat to show anger or to give a warning. Barked - to give orders, ask questions, etc. in a loud unfriendly way. Bellowed - to shout in a loud deep voice, especially because ...
